The Historic Pottawattamie County Squirrel Cage Jail, located in downtown Council Bluffs, was constructed in 1885, featuring 30 prison cells in a three-story rotary structure. The design, patented to inventors William Brown and Benjamin Haugh in 1881, aimed to provide “maximum security with minimum jailer attention.” The structure continued to operate as a jail until 1969. It is currently operated by the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County as a museum.
